If you come to San Francisco, you might ask if there are any Lithuanians around here (well, we all know, that most Lithuanians live on the East Coast of America). You would be very surprised how strong and unified this community is. Every Saturday a part of this community meets at school by the name of ‘Genys’, located in Castro Valley, and they start the day with the Lithuanian National Anthem. After this wonderful morning ritual, students go to learn Lithuanian language and parents solve problems and discuss community life. However, this Saturday (10th of March) was different, because everyone celebrated Restitution of Lithuania's Independence Day. For several months, after their Lithuanian classes, students have been preparing for a show. Their effort to make this day wonderful was appreciated by all! Everyone was singing and tapping their feet as soon as they heard the very first chord of Maironis‘ ‘Lietuva Brangi’.
The second part of the celebration was dedicated to one of the most famous Lithuanian composers and artists, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. There were some guests from Lithuania: Milda, Kazimieras and Adomas‘ family. They travel around the world with their own fairytale book inspired by Čiurlionis‘ artwork. It was a magical journey for everybody, to feel, and to hear the sound of Lithuania. After this spectacular show, the guests invited everybody to take a paintbrush and paint while Čiurlionis‘ music was playing in the background.
You couldn‘t not notice the very full table of Lithuanian national food, the decorations and kids in national costumes, but the most important thing of this celebration were all the people that were around. There were so many of us, and it shows that to be a part of the community, to be in unity, to have a small chat or discuss about life is essential, no matter on what side of the world you are.
